MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF STATE PLANTATIONS

Human tested explanation

It gives me great pleasure to send this message to your Souvenir to be published on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of your Society.

Economic growth in Sri Lanka depends largely upon agricultural performance in which tree crops play a major role.  Three crops mostly tea, rubber and coconut occupy almost 900,000 hectares or 41% of cropped land.  Tree crops continue to be the main source of foreign exchange earnings and employ about 1/6th of the total labour force.  In spite of economic development in other fields the dominant role of the tree crops in Sri Lanka’s economy remains unchanged.

In view of the above, the Government of Sri Lanka has already taken several steps to develop the tree crop sector, to improve its productive and earning capacity and it is heartening to note with these developments the Ceylon Planters’ Society to have gone from strength to strength and is completing 50 years of service to the plantation industry.  I am also reliably informed that activities of the Ceylon Planers’ Society are not confined to requirements of its membership but spread into other areas which include among others the development of the industry and the establishment of Industrial Development Committees for the strengthening of cordial relationship among all those who are employed in the industry.

The Ceylon Planters’ Society in its journey from its origin 50 years back has acquired skills and experience in relation to the management of plantations with a large resident workforce.  I am confident that the Society with its vast experience not only in the management of plantations but also in labour management would extend its full co-operation to rehabilitate the industry in order to bring it back to the level it enjoyed in the 1960s.

In conclusion, I hope that the Society will grow from strength to strength with more and more members, and I take this opportunity to thank all those who held office in your Society during the last 50 years of its existence.
